Further down the coast, you will find Outer Banks Vacation Rentals in Kill Devil Hills, which also happens to be our destination for the day. As mentioned yesterday, the Wright brothers selected Kill Devil Hills to make their first controlled powered airplane flights in 1903. Today, the Wright Brothers National Memorial stands in their honor to commemorate the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier-than-air-machine.

From 1900 to 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright came to Kill Devil Hills from Dayton, Ohio, based on information that the U.S. Weather Bureau about the area's steady wings. They also valued the privacy provided by this location, which in the early twentieth century was remote from major population centers. The Wrights made four flights from ground level near the base of the hill, following three years of gliding experiments from atop this and other nearby sand dunes. It is possible to walk along the actual routes of the four flights, with small monuments marking their starts and finishes. Two wooden sheds, based on historic photographs, recreate the world's first airplane hangar and the brothers' living quarters. The Vision Center is home to a museum featuring models and actuals tools and machines used by the brothers during their flight experiments including a reproduction of the wind tunnel used to test wing shapes and a portion of the end used in the first flight. In the memorial, you can also find a full-scale reproduction of the 1902 glider, the 1903 flying machine, as well as an engine block from the original 1903 Flyer.

Additional exhibits, movies, and educational programs are available in the Centennial Pavilion. You can also climb Big Kill Devil Hill for a breathtaking view of the area from sound to sea. Atop the Hill, stands the 60 foot Pylon - the site where Wilbur and Orville conducted their glider experiments. You can stand on the same spot where the two brothers made their first flights. How cool is that?

Today, let's visit the sandy beaches of Kitty Hawk with the help of Outer Banks Condo Rentals. If you come down Highway 158, look to your right as you come across the bridge and you will see their 600 foot pier along with the parasail boats, jet skis, pontoon boats, sailboats, kayaks, and fishing boats. For golf enthusiasts, they also have a full size driving range, a par 3 course, and a mini golf course.

A Week In The Outer Banks: Day 1

This week, Outer Banks Condo Rentals would like to take you on a tour down the coast of North Carolina. Our first stop is in Duck, NC where we visit Duck's Cottage.

Named for the many ducks and waterfowl in the area, Duck is a relatively new area to visit in the Outer Banks. The area was sparsely populated until the 1970's, since during the 1950's nearby land was used as a bombing range by naval aircraft. The growing community remained unincorporated until 2003, when North Carolina General Assembly House Bill 882 was passed, incorporating the town. Duck is now home to about 500 permanent residents. Duck is also home to a place called Duck's Cottage, which also has an interesting past.

Duck's Cottage is the most unique coffeeshop and bookstore on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The Cottage opened on July 22, 2002, but previously enjoyed a long and storied past as the first, and only, gun club in Duck. Built as the Powder Ridge Gun Club in the early 1920's by a group of New York sportsmen, visitors availed themselves of the plentiful array of waterfowl from when the town took its name. Several old pictures of the building, in addition to its sign, have been given to the Cottage and shows when it stood on the point several hundred feet from their current location. In one in particular, t he Club's distinctive crossed whale bones can still be seen on the peak of the home. Managed by Lewis Scarborough, a village native and life-long resident, most hunting was done from battery rigs and shoal brush blinds. The Club fell into private hands in the forties and remained a private residence until 2001. Its last inhabitant, 'Duck' Braithwaite, was a Duck legend and many early comers to Duck have memories of pleasant sunset cocktail hours spent with he and his wife, Betty, on 'Duck's Porch'. While Duck's Cottage is owned by partners Allen Lewhew and John Power, the building still remains in the ownership of Duck and Betty's sons, Jimmy and Bill Braithwaite.

Sticky Fingers Ribhouse
You wouldn't expect a chain restaurant to be featured in this list, but Sticky Fingers breaks the mold. Their restaurants are known as the best authentic Memphis-style ribs and barbeque in the south. Once you sit down, try not to be intimidated by the many bottles of sauce sitting at your table. You can choose from Tennessee Whiskey BBQ, Carolina Classic BBQ, Carolina Sweet BBQ, Original Memphis BBQ, or Habanero Hot BBQ. Little Pigs

With large portions and low prices, Prosser's is frequented by locals and revisited by tourists year-round. For around $5, you can get either a giant BBQ sandwich with fries OR a pile of BBQ, coleslaw, sweet potatoes, rice with gravy, AND hushpuppies! They also offer a buffet that displays every bit of the heart-clogging glory as their menu and you can get that for under $8. The fried chicken and collard greens are also some of the best in the area.

Hogan's Hickory House BBQ
Hogan's is an excellent family-style barbeque restaurant in Myrtle Beach. When you enter, you will notice a few picnic tables topped with wooden buckets that contain napkins and squeeze bottles of their five unique sauces, original, red, red hot, sweet & smoky, and carolina vinegar. You can squeeze any of these onto their smoked pork, chicken, beef brisket, spare ribs, baby back ribs, or sausage. The beef brisket is their prized meat, which smokes for up to 12 hours to ensure a tender consistency. 15th Annual WingFest In Hilton Head

For the past 15 years, Hilton Head has held WingFest at Shelter Cove Community Park and this year is no exception. The 15th annual WingFest will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20. Admission is $5 and will go to the Island Rec Center's scholarship fund. Each year, it raises about $20,000 which should make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside! Over 20 local restaurants are set to participate in this years event, including the likes of One Hot Mama's, Reilley's Grill & Bar, The Smokehouse, Wild Wing Cafe, and Street Meet.

Typically, over 6,000 pounds of chicken wings are consumed at WingFest! Considering there are usually around 5,000 people in attendance, be prepared to consume at least a pound of wings. There will be flavors for everyone. Whether you like 'em hot, mild, BBQ, or any other way you can sauce a wing, there will be plenty for you to choose from. L'Woods Local Pub & Eatery took home the judge's vote last year at the 'Best Wing'. The Smokehouse, known more for its barbeque and ribs, has won muliple judges' and people's choice awards with their sauced up BBQ wings.

There is more to the WingFest than just chicken wings. By definition, a lighthouse is a tower, building, or framework designed to emit light from a system to lamps and lenses. They are used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs, and safe entries to harbors. Lighthouses mean more to the Outer Banks than merely just a tall, narrow structure. Bodie Island
Located just south of Nags Head, the Bodie Island lighthouse, as it stands today, is the third such beacon built to help mariners maneuver the coast from Cape Hatteras to Currituck Beach. The original Bodie Island lighthouse was built in 1847, abandoned twelve years later, rebuilt in 1859, blown up in 1861 by retreating Confederate troops, and now has stood on the north side of Oregon Inlet since 1872. The familiar black and white striped structure was partly built of materials left over from the construction of the newest Cape Hatteras lighthouse. It stands 150 feet tall and is equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens which flashes its 160,000 candlepower beacon 19 miles over the ocean.

Cape Hatteras
The Cape Hatteras lighthouse, also known as America's lighthouse, is the tallest brick beacon in the country, standing 208 feet. The present lighthouse, officially completed and lit in 1870, is the second build of three than have been constructed in Buxton. Much like its Bodie Island counterpart, this lighthouse showcases the familiar black and white spiral stripes that serve as a warning to mariners of submerged and shifting sandbars which extend almost twenty miles off Cape Hatteras into the Atlantic Ocean. They are known as the Diamond Shoals. Over many years of wear and tear, the lighthouse was built and rebuilt many times. The lighthouse was cut from its original base, hydraulically lifted onto steel beams and traveled along railroad tracks to its present location over the course of 23 days. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is now as far from the ocean as when originally constructed in 1870.

Currituck Beach
The Currituck Beach lighthouse stands 158 feet tall, and is located in Corolla, North Carolina. Its first order Fresnel lens began flashing on December 1, 1875. The beautiful bare brick beacon was built to fill the last remaining "dark spot" of the North Carolina coast between Bodie Island and Cape Henry, Virginia. Prior, many ships floundered in the 80-mile navigational void at night, but the Currituck Beach lighthouse with its beam visible for 18 miles, helped solve the problem.

Ocracoke
The Ocracoke lighthouse is North Carolina's oldest operating lighthouse. In 1798, a 54 foot wooden tower was built on the point of Ocracoke Inlet to mark the channel. Soon afterward, the inlet shifted, rendering the lighthouse ineffective. It was replaced by a light vessel in the inlet in 1820, but by 1822, this structure was rendered useless yet again by shifting sands, and Congress authorized the funding to build the present tower, which stands 75 feet tall and shines 14 miles out to sea. As a harbor light, it emits a constant fixed beam.

The Roanoke Marshes
This lighthouse is modeled after an 1877-1955 screwpile lighthouse that once guided mariners along a narrow channel connecting the Pamlico Sound to the Croatan Sound, at the south side of Roanoke Island in an area known as Roanoke Marshes. Today's lighthouse is the fourth incarnation of the Roanoke Marshes lighthouse, and uses a navigation along North Carolina's trafficked rivers and sounds, dating back to the 1800's. Easily accessible along the Manteo Waterfront, the lighthouse contains exhibits highlighting Roanoke Island's lighthouse and maritime history.

The founder of Andolini's was born in Queens, New York, so he knows a thing or two about good pizza! We recommend Andolini's Special, which is a 19" pie covered in fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, green olives, and black olives. Mom & Pop's Pizza & Subs
James Island's oldest pizzeria, Mom & Pop's has stood the test of time. It has that old style pizzeria type atmosphere that has seemed to disappear over the years. Once you sit down and look at the menu, it's easy to see why this place has been in business for so long. They offer unique items such as fried ravioli, pizza quesadillas, chicken cheesesteak calzones, and something known as Stugott's sub, which is a hot sub consisting of Italian sausage, spicy capicola, and provolone cheese. While all of these are quite tasty, their pizza is too legit to pass up! If you can, get a few of their specialty pizzas and try to sample as many scrumptious combinations as possible. Make sure that you do not leave without tasting the Bianco, a white pizza with garlic olive oil, minced garlic, oregano, parmesan and romano cheese. It is simple and delicious!

EVO Pizza
Extra Virgin Oven (EVO) is fresh, honest, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, expertly and simply prepared with seasonal, local ingredients. They support local farmers and are passionate about using only the freshest ingredients. EVO offers gourmet food at very reasonable prices. As far as pizza goes, this ISN'T your ordinary pizzeria. With unique toppings such as arugula, wild mushroom ragout, sliced speck, and cow's milk ricotta, you are guaranteed to eat pizza unlike you ever have! For a meaty bite, go with the pork trifecta which is topped with house made sweet sausage, pepperoni, smoked bacon, and mozzarella cheese.

Park Pizza has ten different sauces to coat your pizza, including buffalo sauce, mustard BBQ sauce, and alfredo. Don't take too long choosing a sauce, they have 11 different cheeses to be piled on next. As far as toppings go, it gets crazier than the sauce and cheese choices. You can top your pizza with 21 different proteins, anything from your plain old pepperoni to thai curry chicken, crab, and even hot dog slices! There are 34 other items which you can toss on top of your pizza which include fruits, veggies, and some fresh herbs. If you are having too hard of a time building your own pie, Park Pizza has 38 pizzas laid out for you on their menu. To really confuse your taste buds, try the grilled cheese pizza which is topped with butter, mozzarella, provolone, cheddar, and dill pickles. Yum!

D'Allesandro's
At the time of their opening, the pizza scene in Charleston was lacking creativity. D'Allesando's took it as their personal mission to produce gourmet pizza at affordable prices. They value their customers, use quality ingredients, and truly care for the food. While they may not have as many different choices at Park Pizza, D'Allesandro's has a lot more to choose from than your average pizzeria. Their pizzas can be ordered from two to five topping 'gourmets' as they like to call them, 21 in total. Some of our favorites include the buffalo chicken, which is a 2-topping gourmet, topped with olive oil, garlic, mozzarella, buffalo chicken, and bleu cheese crumbles. Another is the Big Cheesy, a white pizza covered in mozzarella, ricotta, provolone, and feta cheeses, garlic, and oregano.

The Hunt For The Best Burger In Hilton Head

Street Meet

I'm just going to cut right to the chase on Street Meet. They offer some of the most unique burger creations that you have ever seen and they are equally tasty. Have you ever had deep-fried chicken wings on top of your burger before? Well now you have that chance if you order EZ's Favorite. It's an 8 oz. burger topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, Carolina BBQ sauce, and two chicken wings! Of course you can't actually eat the burger with the wings still on it, but we will still give them points for creativity. The Low Country is another favorite, a 1/2 pound patty topped with American cheese, sauteed onions, and fried shrimp. Who wouldn't want to at least give it a shot?

One Hot Mama's American Grille
This family-friendly restaurant offers delicious baby-back ribs, authentic pit-to-plate BBQ, hand-cut steaks, char-grilled chicken, and saucy hot wings. Let's not forget the main reason why One Hot Mama's is being discussed: the burgers. They offer 6 standard burger platters, but with over 17 toppings, you can customize your burger to the max! Looking for something with a little spice? Try the Devil Burger. It consists of a 1/2 pound burger patty topped with pepperjack cheese, their own devil sauce, and a whole fire roasted jalapeno. Dios mio!

Jump & Phil's
Voted Best Burger on the Island! While that may not be entirely true, Jump & Phil's do have a pretty tasty concoction. They have a rather extensive menu, yet their burger options are quite limited. You can top your 1/2 pound patty with American, Swiss, cheddar, mozzarella, bacon, and/or sauteed mushrooms. There is nothing like a heaping pile of beautifully browned mushrooms, curly strips on bacon with just a smidgen of fat around the edges, and a gooey blanket of mozzarella. The cheese looks like it spends a few quality minutes under the broiler to get those quintessential carmel-colored spots like you find on a good pizza. Yum!

Reilley's North End Pub
Reilley's first opened on Hilton Head Island in 1982, when Tom and Diana Reilley started a small neighborhood pub in the Gallery of Shops on the south end of the island. It soon became a destination and favorite gathering place for locals. They opened the North End Pub soon after and the ambiance has replicated. Reilley's offers many tasty sandwiches such as prime rib, corned beef, meatloaf, and something called the pilgrim. The pilgrim is comprised of turkey, cranberry, bacon, lettuce, mayo, all on pumpernickel bread, but I digress. Reilley's 'Blarney Burgers' are not to be missed. You have the option of building your own 8 oz. burger on their airy ciabatta or choosing one of their own creations. I recommend the blackened bleu burger, which is your standard 8 oz. burger topped with crispy onion straws and bleu cheese crumbles all on grilled rye.

Pittsburgh has the Pirates. Boston has the Red Sox. While Charleston may not have an MLB franchise, they do have a professional team that can call the 'Holy City' home.

The Charleston Riverdogs are a minor league baseball affiliate of the New York Yankees. They play in the Class A South Atlantic League which also includes the Greenville Drive, another team based in South Carolina. Chalreston has had very little success on the field regarding minor league baseball. In 2008, the Riverdogs completed the most successful stretch of on the field play in Charleston's baseball history with their sixth straight winning season. This being known, Charlestonians have suggested that their baseball teams has been cursed over the years. Evidence to support this can be found in the 22 straight losses by a Charleston team in 1975, failure to post a winning season in the 1990's, as the Rainbows, in 2008 when the Riverdogs failed to make the playoffs despite having the best record in the Southern Division, and the fact that Charleston has not won a championship since 1948, bringing over 60 years of futility to Charleston baseball.

Despite their lack of winning, the Riverdogs have produced quite a few players that moved on to be sucessful in the bigs. Delmon Young, Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton, Josh Hamilton, Aubrey Huff, and Roberto Alomar are some of the many Major League Baseball players who have competed for Charleston.

Two months ago, the New York Yankees announced that Torre Tyson would return for his fourth season as manager of the team. He led the Riverdogs to a seven straight winning season in 2009 with a 74-65 record, while notching his 200th victory as manager on June 29. In his three years as skipper, Tyson has posted an overall record of 232-186.

Two wooden sheds, based on historic photographs, recreate the world's first airplane hangar and the brothers' living quarters. Our first stop is in Duck, NC where we visit Duck's Cottage.<br /><br />Named for the many ducks and waterfowl in the area, Duck is a relatively new area to visit in the Outer Banks. The area was sparsely populated until the 1970's, since during the 1950's nearby land was used as a bombing range by naval aircraft. The growing community remained unincorporated until 2003, when North Carolina General Assembly House Bill 882 was passed, incorporating the town. Duck is now home to about 500 permanent residents. Duck is also home to a place called Duck's Cottage, which also has an interesting past.<br /><br />Duck's Cottage is the most unique coffeeshop and bookstore on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The Cottage opened on July 22, 2002, but previously enjoyed a long and storied past as the first, and only, gun club in Duck. Built as the Powder Ridge Gun Club in the early 1920's by a group of New York sportsmen, visitors availed themselves of the plentiful array of waterfowl from when the town took its name. Several old pictures of the building, in addition to its sign, have been given to the Cottage and shows when it stood on the point several hundred feet from their current location. In one in particular, t he Club's distinctive crossed whale bones can still be seen on the peak of the home. Managed by Lewis Scarborough, a village native and life-long resident, most hunting was done from battery rigs and shoal brush blinds. The Club fell into private hands in the forties and remained a private residence until 2001. Its last inhabitant, 'Duck' Braithwaite, was a Duck legend and many early comers to Duck have memories of pleasant sunset cocktail hours spent with he and his wife, Betty, on 'Duck's Porch'. With large portions and low prices, Prosser's is frequented by locals and revisited by tourists year-round. For around $5, you can get either a giant BBQ sandwich with fries OR a pile of BBQ, coleslaw, sweet potatoes, rice with gravy, AND hushpuppies! They also offer a buffet that displays every bit of the heart-clogging glory as their menu and you can get that for under $8. The fried chicken and collard greens are also some of the best in the area.<br /><br /><b>Hogan's Hickory House BBQ</b><br />Hogan's is an excellent family-style barbeque restaurant in Myrtle Beach. When you enter, you will notice a few picnic tables topped with wooden buckets that contain napkins and squeeze bottles of their five unique sauces, original, red, red hot, sweet & smoky, and carolina vinegar. You can squeeze any of these onto their smoked pork, chicken, beef brisket, spare ribs, baby back ribs, or sausage. The beef brisket is their prized meat, which smokes for up to 12 hours to ensure a tender consistency. The 15th annual WingFest will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20. Admission is $5 and will go to the Island Rec Center's scholarship fund. Each year, it raises about $20,000 which should make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside! Over 20 local restaurants are set to participate in this years event, including the likes of One Hot Mama's, Reilley's Grill & Bar, The Smokehouse, Wild Wing Cafe, and Street Meet.<br /><br />Typically, over 6,000 pounds of chicken wings are consumed at WingFest! Considering there are usually around 5,000 people in attendance, be prepared to consume at least a pound of wings. There will be flavors for everyone. Whether you like 'em hot, mild, BBQ, or any other way you can sauce a wing, there will be plenty for you to choose from. L'Woods Local Pub & Eatery took home the judge's vote last year at the 'Best Wing'.
